On Motivation

June 9th, 2006

The aura of motivation is not a whole lot different than the attitude of victimization. When you empower someone without the tools to otherwise enable them, you’ve set up a machine which is not only inefficient and ineffective, but is actually counterproductive. An individual is charged with a false sense of self: not because they can’t generate the self, but only because they haven’t been given the tools to do so. Trophies awarded without achievement creates an attitude and an atmosphere in which performance is less relevant than attempts; intentions are more important than results. And in the real world, that just simply isn’t true. With the best of intentions, a less than skillful swordsman will die at the hands of a maliciously intentioned but more skillful swordsman. That is the simple truth!
