At the moment that Paul Simon (or any artist, for that matter) traverses from publishing a sentiment which resonates with his audience to being in love with music for its own sake, he ends up losing any opportunity for popular influence. The influence of Simon and Garfunkel occurred not when they published their music, but only when they declared a message consistent with a message their audience needed to hear.
