There is a ranking called the Index of Economic Freedom. This index, which was created by the Heritage Foundation, ranks nations based on numerous variables that indicate how intrusive government is in the economic system. The United States has been ranked as high as third in 1995 and was 12th in 2005.

In 2007, the United States ranked fourth.
