Driven by Opportunity

August 27th, 2007

It doesn’t look that way to an entrepreneur because an entrepreneur is driven by opportunity, not by conservation of assets. An entrepreneur is not a gambler, by a long shot. However, an entrepreneur is, by definition, enormously optimistic. If an entrepreneur were seeing the glass as half empty, he or she would not be an entrepreneur at all. Managers manage assets. Entrepreneurs create assets. They both have a very clear place in the economy.

Without entrepreneurs, assets would not be created. Without managers, the assets would not be preserved and grown. There are some entrepreneurs who could also function as managers and some managers who could also function as entrepreneurs. However, the best of all worlds is when the two traits are synthesized into a common organizational force which provides for both a systematic creation of assets and an energetic management of them.
