Fragment
November 7th, 2007All science is the reduction of multiplicity to unity. Any great scientific theory takes a whole range of phenomena and then organizes them into a vision that unifies the phenomena. As human beings, the more we are able to unify all the various and disparate events, characteristics and attributes of existence into a unified view, the more clearly we see the underlying unity in existence and the internal harmony in ourselves.
While western individualism has its strong points—the ability of a human being, on an individual level, to have an impact both horizontally and vertically—the downside of western individualism is narcissism and self-absorption with everything that could be fulfilled in the horizontal is fulfilled in the horizontal. Whether you are an Anna Nicole Smith, or a Paris Hilton, or a Britney Spears, there is no vertical level to the experience that can be shared with others. As a consequence, the more narcissistic and self-absorbed is the perception, the more disunified is the perception of existence. Malfunction results, not harmony.
