Bridget Jones Diary and Mike Huckabee
March 3rd, 2008Have you ever seen Bridget Jones’s Diary? Have you ever heard Mike Huckabee? What’s the charm? What’s the attraction?
I thought about both of those on the same day.
I was working on the elliptical, flailing away and sweating in the process as I was watching Mike Huckabee do a presentation to a group in Wichita, Kansas. That night, I came home, walked upstairs after doing e-mails, and saw Janet watching Bridget Jones’s Diary, which I had seen several times in the past. Bridget was doing her thing, as Mike Huckabee was doing his. I said, “Janet, what is it that’s charming about Bridget Jones?” She said she wasn’t sure, except that she was so real.
I hesitated for a bit, and then I realized that, at the end of the day, it really is about being real.
Whether it’s Mike Huckabee or Bridget Jones, when you speak truth, when you’re vulnerable, when you’re simply human, people get it.
I love Obama. He’s inspirational beyond belief. I think Hilary is enormously competent. I think John McCain would turn out to be a great leader, although somewhat constrained in his breadth. And I will certainly end up supporting one of them.
However, when I hear Mike Huckabee be who he is and listen to his message; when I see Bridget Jones…I’m reminded that it is as important to be human as it is to be right. People attach to being human far more than they attach to being right. I won’t be supporting Huckabee, but I appreciate his commitment to staying real!
