How Milton Friedman Saved Chile:

In a tale of two earthquakes, one in Haiti and the other one in Chile (the story is unfolding even more significantly of late).

While the earthquake in Chile was 500 times more powerful than the one in Haiti, the death toll and the total amount of damage in Chile were a fraction.

Commentaries are only now beginning to come out on why. This article by Bret Stephens in the Wall Street Journal suggests a particular economic reason which I’ve heard voiced elsewhere in other commentaries. Take a read.
