Where Have all the Flowers Lyrics Gone?

I drop off Isabella, our eighth grader, every morning at school.  It’s about a 14-minute ride and during that time, and most of the time, we listen to the various pop stations addressing Isabella’s generation on Sirius.  There are something like five of them and, aside from Venus, four of them tend to play the Top Ten to Top Twenty hits as their entire repertoire.

Needless to say, I’ve become pretty familiar with the Top Ten.

The other day, I happened to be focused on the lyrics for several of them, and it dawned on me how far we have come from the days of the songwriters like James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Phoebe Snow, Peter, Paul and Mary, and countless others of that ilk who sang songs we all recognized which had pleasant melody lines, but actually had lyrics which say something.

And if the truth be told, it’s not to say that the Top Ten pop songs currently being played are not musically interesting in their own right.  It’s only to say that I have a tough time understanding why it appears so very hard to publish a pop song that has a beat, but, at the time, also has lyrics that actually convey meaning.

According to Billboard.com, the Top Ten pop hits as of last Thursday are as follows:

1.            “Closer” – The Chainsmokers Featuring Halsey

2.            “Let Me Love You” – DJ Snake Featuring Justin Bieber

3.            “Heathens” – Twenty One Pilots

4.            “Starboy” – The Weeknd Featuring Daft Punk

5.            “Side to Side” – Ariana Grande Featuring Nicki Minaj

6.            “I Hate U I Love U” – gnash Featuring Olivia O’Brien

7.            “24K Magic” – Bruno Mars

8.            “Scars to Your Beautiful” – Alessia Cara

9.            “Starving” – Hailee Steinfeld & Grey Featuring Zedd

10.         “Don’t Wanna Know” – Maroon 5 Featuring Kendrick Lamar

Number one, “Closer”, sports the following refrain:

So, baby, pull me closer

In the back seat of your Rover

That I know you can’t afford

Bite that tattoo on your shoulder

Pull the sheets right off the corner

Of that mattress that you stole

From your roommate back in Boulder

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

Seriously?  Does anybody drive a Rover who just happens to have a roommate in Boulder and a tattoo on her shoulder?  Is there not an opportunity to actually create lyrics that communicate as opposed to words that simply rhyme at the end of the sentences?

How about “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake featuring Justin Beiber?

Listen to these extraordinary words:

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Oh, baby, baby

It’s almost too much to endure.  I get that this is pop.  But so was “Both Sides Now.”  This is supposed to have a beat, but so did “California Dreaming.”  I guess this has a superstar, but so did “Longfellow Serenade” – and even then, that was a stretch.

I could go on, of course, but just one final illustration makes my point.  Take a look at “Starboy.”

I’m tryna put you in the worst mood, ah

P1 cleaner than your church shoes, ah

Milli point two just to hurt you, ah

All red lamb’ just to tease you, ah

None of these toys on lease too, ah

Made your whole year in a week too, yeah

Main bitch out of your league too, ah

Side bitch out of your league too, ah

My God!  It’s painful.  Candidly, as I close off this entry, I want to make sure that we all understand it has nothing to do with “modern music.”  Frankly, I like the rhythm of a great deal of modern music.  Taylor Swift…One Dimension…and Justin Timberlake – they are all “modern pop artists.”  And I like their music.  And, other than with their propensity to dumb down the lyrics, I enjoy Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars and Maroon 5.

I guess my only lament, when it comes right down to it, is why, to make a Top Ten pop hit, the lyrics have to almost be imbecilic.  It is almost as if songs are being written for text messages with an autocorrect feature on for rhyme.  The meaning doesn’t matter; the only thing that does is completing the beat.

In any event, enough venting.  For your benefit, I took the opportunity to copy the lyrics of the Top Ten pop hits…according to Billboard.com.  Happy reading!

“Closer”

The Chainsmokers Featuring Halsey

Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you

I drink too much and that’s an issue

But I’m OK

Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet them

But I hope I never see them Again

I know it breaks your heart

Moved to the city in a broke-down car

And four years, no calls

Now you’re looking pretty in a hotel bar

And I, I, I, I, I can’t stop

No, I, I, I, I, I can’t stop

So, baby, pull me closer

In the back seat of your Rover

That I know you can’t afford

Bite that tattoo on your shoulder

Pull the sheets right off the corner

Of that mattress that you stole

From your roommate back in Boulder

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

You look as good as the day I met you

I forget just why I left you,

I was insane

Stay and play that Blink-182 song

That we beat to death in Tucson, OK

I know it breaks your heart

Moved to the city in a broke-down car

And four years, no call

Now I’m looking pretty in a hotel bar

And I, I, I, I, I can’t stop

No, I, I, I, I, I can’t stop

So, baby, pull me closer

In the back seat of your Rover

That I know you can’t afford

Bite that tattoo on your shoulder

Pull the sheets right off the corner

Of that mattress that you stole

From your roommate back in Boulder

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

So, baby, pull me closer

In the back seat of your Rover

That I know you can’t afford

Bite that tattoo on your shoulder

Pull the sheets right off the corner

Of that mattress that you stole

From your roommate back in Boulder

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

No, we ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

No, we ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

No, we ain’t ever getting older

We ain’t ever getting older

No, we ain’t ever getting older

“Let Me Love You”

DJ Snake Featuring Justin Bieber

I used to believe

We were burnin’ on the edge of somethin’ beautiful

Somethin’ beautiful

Sellin’ a dream

Smoke and mirrors keep us waiting on a miracle

On a miracle

Say, go through the darkest of days

Heaven’s a heartbreak away

Never let you go, never let me down

Oh, it’s been a hell of a ride

Driving the edge of a knife

Never let you go, never let me down

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Oh, baby, baby

Don’t fall asleep

At the wheel, we’ve got a million miles ahead of us

Miles ahead of us

All that we need

Is a rude awakening to know we’re good enough

Know we’re good enough

Say go through the darkest of days

Heaven’s a heartbreak away

Never let you go, never let me down

Oh, it’s been a hell of a ride

Driving the edge of a knife

Never let you go, never let me down

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Oh, baby, baby

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Don’t you give up, nah-nah-nah

I won’t give up, nah-nah-nah

Let me love you

Let me love you

Oh, baby, baby

“Heathens”

Twenty One Pilots

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow

Wait for them to ask you who you know

Please don’t make any sudden moves

You don’t know the half of the abuse

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow

Wait for them to ask you who you know

Please don’t make any sudden moves

You don’t know the half of the abuse

Welcome to the room of people

Who have rooms of people that they loved one day

Docked away

Just because we check the guns at the door

Doesn’t mean our brains will change from hand grenades

You’ll never know the psychopath sitting next to you

You’ll never know the murderer sitting next to you

You’ll think, “How’d I get here, sitting next to you?”

But after all I’ve said

Please don’t forget

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow

Wait for them to ask you who you know

Please don’t make any sudden moves

You don’t know the half of the abuse

We don’t deal with outsiders very well

They say newcomers have a certain smell

You have trust issues, not to mention

They say they can smell your intentions

You’ll never know the freak show sitting next to you

You’ll have some weird people sitting next to you

You’ll think, “How’d I get here, sitting next to you?”

But after all I’ve said

Please don’t forget

(Watch it, watch it)

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow

Wait for them to ask you who you know

Please don’t make any sudden moves

You don’t know the half of the abuse

All my friends are heathens. Take it slow

(Watch it)

Wait for them to ask you who you know

(Watch it)

Please, all my friends are heathens. Take it slow

(Watch it)

Wait for them to ask you who you know

Why’d you come? You knew you should have stayed

(It’s blasphemy)

I tried to warn you just to stay away

(Away)

And now they’re outside ready to bust

(To bust)

It looks like you might be one of us

I’ve been there all night

I’ve been there all day

And boy, got me walkin’ side to side (side to side)

“I Hate U I Love U”

gnash Featuring Olivia O’Brien

Feeling used

But I’m

Still missing you

And I can’t

See the end of this

Just wanna feel your kiss

Against my lips

And now all this time

Is passing by

But I still can’t seem to tell you why

It hurts me every time I see you

Realize how much I need you

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I love you

Don’t want to but I can’t put nobody else above you

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I want you

You want her, you need her

And I’ll never be her

I miss you when I can’t sleep

Or right after coffee

Or right when I can’t eat

I miss you in my front seat

Still got sand in my sweaters

From nights we don’t remember

Do you miss me like I miss you?

Fucked around and got attached to you

Friends can break your heart too,

And I’m always tired but never of you

If I pulled a you on you, you wouldn’t like that shit

I put this reel out, but you wouldn’t bite that shit

I type a text but then I never mind that shit

I got these feelings but you never mind that shit

Oh oh, keep it on the low

You’re still in love with me but your friends don’t know

If you wanted me you would just say so

And if I were you, I would never let me go

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I love you

Don’t want to but I can’t put nobody else above you

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I want you

You want her, you need her

And I’ll never be her

I don’t mean no harm

I just miss you on my arm

Wedding bells were just alarms

Caution tape around my heart

You ever wonder what we could have been?

You said you wouldn’t and you fucking did

Lie to me, lie with me, get your fucking fix

Now all my drinks and all my feelings are all fucking mixed

Always missing people that I shouldn’t be missing

Sometimes you gotta burn some bridges just to create some distance

I know that I control my thoughts and I should stop reminiscing

But I learned from my dad that it’s good to have feelings

When love and trust are gone

I guess this is moving on

Everyone I do right does me wrong

So every lonely night I sing this song

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I love you

Don’t want to but I can’t put nobody else above you

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I want you

You want her, you need her

And I’ll never be her

All alone I watch you watch her

Like she’s the only girl you’ve ever seen

You don’t care you never did

You don’t give a damn about me

Yeah all alone I watch you watch her

She is the only thing you ever see

How is it you never notice

That you are slowly killing me

I hate you, I love you,

I hate that I love you

Don’t want to but I can’t put nobody else above you

I hate you, I love you

I hate that I want you

You want her, you need her

And I’ll never be her

“Scars to Your Beautiful”

Alessia Cara

She just wants to be beautiful

She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits,

She craves attention, she praises an image,

She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor

Oh she don’t see the light that’s shining

Deeper than the eyes can find it

Maybe we have made her blind

So she tries to cover up her pain, and cut her woes away

‘Cause covergirls don’t cry after their face is made

But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark

You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

She has dreams to be an envy, so she’s starving

You know, “Covergirls eat nothing.”

She says, “Beauty is pain and there’s beauty in everything.”

“What’s a little bit of hunger?”

“I could go a little while longer,” she fades away

She don’t see her perfect, she don’t understand she’s worth it

Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface

Ah oh, ah ah oh,

So to all the girls that’s hurting

Let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer

The light that shines within

There’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark

You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

No better you than the you that you are

(no better you than the you that you are)

No better life than the life we’re living

(no better life than the life we’re living)

No better time for your shine, you’re a star

(no better time for your shine, you’re a star)

Oh, you’re beautiful, oh, you’re beautiful

There’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark

You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

Whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh

And you don’t have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we’re stars and we’re beautiful

“Starving”

Hailee Steinfeld & Grey Featuring Zedd

You know just what to say

Shit that scares me

I should just walk away

But I can’t move my feet

The more that I know you, the more I want to

Something inside me’s changed

I was so much younger yesterday, oh

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

Don’t need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo

By the way, right away you do things to my body

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

I didn’t know that I… I didn’t know that I… ’til I tasted you

I didn’t know that I… I didn’t know that I… ’til I tasted you

By the way, right away you do things to my body

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

You know just how to make

My heart beat faster

Emotional earthquake,

Bring on disaster

You hit me head on, got me weak in my knees

Yeah, something inside me’s changed

I was so much younger yesterday, aye

So much younger yesterday, oh, yeah

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

Don’t need no butterflies when you give me the whole damn zoo

By the way, right away you do things to my body

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

I didn’t know that I… I didn’t know that I… ’til I tasted you

I didn’t know that I… I didn’t know that I… ’til I tasted you

By the way, right away you do things to my body

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

You, yeah, ’til I tasted you

I didn’t know that I… I didn’t know that I… ’til I tasted you

By the way, right away you do things to my body

I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I tasted you

The more that I know you, the more I want to

Something inside me’s changed

I was so much younger yesterday

“Don’t Wanna Know”

Maroon 5 Featuring Kendrick Lama

Oh hey

Oh, oh hey

Oh, oh, oh hey

Uh oh, uh oh

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who‘s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, no

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, oh

I don’t wanna know

Wasted (wasted)

And the more I drink the more I think about you

Oh no, no, I can’t take it

Baby every place I go reminds me of you

Do you think of me? Of what we used to be?

Is it better now that I’m not around?

My friends are actin’ strange, they don’t bring up your name

Are you happy now?

Are you happy now?

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, no

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, oh

I don’t wanna know

And every time I go out, yeah

I hear it from this one, I hear it from that one

That you got someone new

Yeah, I see but don’t believe it

Even in my head you’re still in my bed

Maybe I’m just a fool

Do you think of me? Of what we used to be?

Is it better now that I’m not around?

My friends are actin’ strange, they don’t bring up your name

Are you happy now?

Are you happy now?

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, no

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, oh

I don’t wanna know

 (Oh hey)

No more “please stop”

No more hashtag boo’d up screenshots

No more tryin’ make me jealous on your birthday

You know just how I made you better on your birthday, oh

Do he do you like this, do he woo you like this?

Do he lay it down for you, touch your poona like this?

Matter fact, never mind, we’ll let the past be

May be his right now, but your body’s still me, woah

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, no

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, oh

I don’t wanna know

I don’t wanna know, know, know, know

Who’s taking you home, home, home, home

And loving you so, so, so, so

The way I used to love you, oh

I don’t wanna know

Oh hey

Oh, oh hey

Oh, oh, oh hey

Uh oh, uh oh
